Chicago Still & Box at 63rd & Stewart 1-14-12

Tim Olk captured a series of powerful images during a Still & Box Alarm at a vacant, three-story courtyard building located at 63rd and Stewart on Saturday morning. The photos offer a rare and detailed look at the emergency response efforts by the Chicago Fire Department. In one image, firefighters are seen directing a hose line toward one of the upper floors, showcasing their quick reaction to the blaze. Another photo highlights Squad 5A working in Sector 3 while an engine company feeds water into a second-floor window, emphasizing the coordinated effort among different units. As the fire raged, multiple lines were deployed into the building to tackle the remaining flames, illustrating the intensity of the situation. A Tower Ladder 37 unit maneuvered its platform into the courtyard, providing critical support for the operation. Meanwhile, members of Squad 5 used an acetylene torch to remove metal gates from the entrance, allowing better access to the site. The team also faced challenges with frozen equipment, as shown in another shot where firefighters worked to thaw a ladder so it could be returned to the apparatus. Steam was used to help retract an ice-covered extension ladder, highlighting the harsh weather conditions that added to the difficulty of the rescue. Near the end of the operation, the 18th Battalion and several firefighters gathered for a group photo, capturing a moment of unity and determination. These images not only document the event but also reflect the professionalism and dedication of the responders. More images from the scene can be found HERE.
